Flood and Drought Management Tools

New tool could help to predict, prevent surging waters in flood plains

A group of scientist studying China's Yellow River has developed a new tool that could help to predict and prevent frequent floods. The tool is based on a formula to calculate the sediment transport. This formula can also be applied to study the sustainability of eroding coastlines worldwide. Understanding sediment transport in rivers is important for people living near waterways around the world, said Judy Skog, a program director for the National Science Foundation. It is expected that this study will lead to better predictions for sediment transport, and to better understand how sediment flow is affected by anthropogenic activities, conservation and management efforts.
