Flood and Drought Management Tools

9th GEF Biennial International Waters Conference

5-8 November 2018 | Marrakesh, Morocco

The 9th GEF Biennial International Waters Conference (IWC9), is a signature learning event for the GEF IW focal area. It is an interactive training and experience-sharing event during which the participants will not only sum up the progress achieved in their project, but also will look into the future of programming within and beyond the focal area.

Monitoring flood and drought events is critical to improve planning and management of basin water resources, guide investments, and contribute to the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Flood and Drought Management Tools project was present at IWC9 to share knoweldge and expeirence on how to plan for extreme events:

Roundtable discussions (4) with guiding questions:

Understanding your experience

  1. Have you already done a TDA or SAP in your basin?
  2. What planning approaches/tools do you use in your basin?
  3. Do you use updated climate information to plan for floods and droughts in your current planning process (e.g. TDA/SAP)?
  4. If so, where do you get this information from, and how do you use it?
  5. How do you monitor progress of the implementation of the SAP in your basin?
  6. Do you rely on earth observations when monitoring the progress of the implementation of the SAP in your basin?
  7. Do you have access to frequently updated earth observation data/images? At what cost?

Understanding your needs/gaps

  1. What data and analysis are missing?

Applying the Flood and Drought Portal

  1. Do you see a potential for applying the tools presented to improve the stakeholder consultations and thus the planning in your basin? How?
