VBA hosts 3rd Project Steering Committee in Akosombo, Ghana

The 3rd Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting was held in Akosombo, Ghana.This is the location of the Akosombo Dam which is Ghana’s main hydro-power dam; Akosombo Dam. The construction of the dam flooded part of the Volta River Basin, and led to the subsequent creation of Lake Volta. The meeting, which ran over 3 days, from 5th to 7th April, 2017 included a site visit on the first day to the Akosombo Dam, the Water Research Institute (WRI) Aquaculture Research and Development Centre and a tour on the Lake Volta.

Representatives from the Basin authorities, namely, the Volta Basin Authority (VBA), the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC), and the Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII) from Thailand make up part of the PSC, with additional resource persons from the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), UNEP-DHI, and the implementing agency (UN Environment).  The meeting is intended to provide the executing agencies (DHI and the International Water Association) with guidance and support in the implementation of the project to ensure relevant project outcomes. The PSC, on an annual basis review progress and provide recommendations as appropriate, including review, amendment and approval of annual reports, budgets and work plans.

This year’s PSC meeting focused on the sustainability of the FMDT project in the context of continuity after closure of the project.
