Future climate projections indicate the potential for increased flood peak flows and flood volumes, which is likely to affect flood risk in the California Central Valley. The Central Valley Flood Protection Plan (CVFPP) is a strategic and long-range plan for improving flood risk management in the Central Valley, adopted by the Central Valley Flood Protection Board in 2012. The Draft 2017 CVFPP Update prepared by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) refines and makes additional recommendations regarding flood management policies and investments necessary to implement the CVFPP over 30 years. In accordance with California legislation, and in line with State and federal policy and technical guidance, the 2017 update has been informed by the latest climate science and understanding to enable evaluation of the true costs of managing flood waters over the design life of structural and non-structural plan elements. This presentation summarizes the most recent assessment of projected climate change impacts on the flood hydrology and flood risks in the Sacramento and San Joaquin River Basins. The phased implementation of the Draft 2017 CVFPP Update is expected to provide a resilient system under projected climate change conditions.
